Steps
- Gather all ingredients.
- Using a rolling pin, roll each bread slice until entirely flat. Trim just the crust off each bread slice, forming a 4x4-inch square. Spread each bread slice with an even layer of mustard (about 3/4 teaspoon per slice).
- Working with 1 slice of bread at a time, place a halved cheese slice on the edge of the bread closest to you; place 1 hot dog horizontally on top of the cheese slice. If needed, trim the ends of the hot dog so that no hot dog extends over edges of bread. Spoon 1 1/2 teaspoons onion horizontally across the cheese slice above the hot dog, followed by 1 teaspoon of relish.
- Roll up tightly, applying gentle pressure to help seal the bread seams together. Slice crosswise into 3 equal pieces (about 1 1/4-inches each), and transfer to a serving platter. Repeat process with remaining ingredients. Preheat an air fryer to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C) for 5 minutes, or according to manufacturer's instructions. Lightly coat tops and sides of roll-ups with cooking spray. Working in 2 batches, add roll-ups to basket, spacing them 1/2-inch apart, and cook until bread is lightly golden brown, about 5 minutes.
- Stir together barbecue sauce, mayonnaise, and seasoned salt in a small bowl until evenly combined.
- Serve hotdog roll-ups with mayonnaise mixture. Recipe developed by Amanda Holstein
Frequently asked questions
Can I make hot dog roll-ups in the oven instead of an air fryer?
Yes. Spray them the same way and bake at around 200C on a lined tray, turning once, until the bread is lightly golden. They will take longer than the 5 minutes an air fryer needs because the oven does not move air across them as aggressively.
Why do my roll-ups come apart?
The bread was not flattened enough or the roll was not tight. Rolling each slice completely flat makes it behave like pastry rather than bread, and pressing the seam firmly as you finish is what seals it. Overfilling is the other cause, so trim the hot dog so nothing overhangs.
Do I have to flatten the bread with a rolling pin?
Yes, this does not work without it. A normal slice cracks when rolled around a hot dog, whereas a flattened one stretches and seals. It also lets you trim the crusts to a neat 4 inch square so the roll is even all the way along.
What bread works best for hot dog roll-ups?
Soft, plain white sandwich bread, which is what this uses. It flattens without tearing and seals to itself. Sourdough and other open-crumbed loaves crack as you roll them and will not hold the seam.
Can I make hot dog roll-ups ahead for a party?
Roll and slice them ahead and keep them covered in the fridge, then cook them just before serving. The dipping sauce of barbecue sauce, mayonnaise and seasoned salt can also be stirred together in advance.
Can I use a different kind of hot dog?
Yes, pork, chicken or vegetarian hot dogs all roll up the same way. Whatever you use, trim the ends so it fits inside the bread square, since anything overhanging stops the roll sealing.
